car – 1

As I am now in the market to purchase a car, I thought it would be fun to post occasionally on the experiences of a non-car owner (me, now) and his transition to one who will shortly own (and rely upon) a car.

I have forgotten how incredibly prevalent (and sometimes necessary) they are in the US. I have also noticed while surfing incessantly (obsessively?) to find the best car, the best deal, the best insurance, the best ….it goes on and on…how much art has been made around the car how much popular culture is interested in them. So how do art and cars intersect?

During my searches I have come across sites like BMWism featuring a nice gallery showing all the BMW cars decorated by well-known artists – from Calder in 1975 through Koons in 2010. very cool.

look for more ‘car’ posts to come as my story continues…

The U.S. Postal Service celebrates five newspaper comic strips by dedicating the Sunday Funnies stamps. The 44-cent First-Class stamps honor comic strips: Archie, Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes.

The stamps were dedicated at The Ohio State University, home of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum. ”Like stamps, comic strips often tell a story through humor, adventure, fantasy and sometimes even drama,” said U.S. Postal Service Eastern Area Vice President Megan Brennan. “Today, we are gathered to commemorate five of our country’s most beloved comic strips and dedicate an amazing stamp pane that represents a unique part of American culture.”

For great coffee, art, and ambience in Berkeley, stop in to see the photographs of Janet Delaney at Local 123 cafe

The large-scale, and somehow very intimate, portraits of trees are on display until July 31, 2010.

If it sounds familiar it is because I have posted about this great spot before and there is a great write up about the cafe and the photographer at Berkeleyside Blog.

though I am not yet sure exactly what is happening here, or what they mean by ‘visual music’ Artronica is a site to watch – especially if you are interested in avant-garde music, and sound art. I definitely heard some cool sounds here.

from the site: “Artronica is a movement that presents music entirely as fine art in the same sense as painting, sculpture, video, performance and installation. We believe this is a crucial idea for artists to consider at this exciting and hyper-accelerated time.”

why advocate for the arts?

see this video for a few great reasons, but what are yours? share your thoughts by adding a comment below.

book: a whole new mind ?

“The last few decades have belonged to a certain kind of person with a certain kind of mind – computer programmers who could crank code, lawyers who could craft contracts, MBA’s who could crunch numbers. But the keys to the kingdom are changing hands. The future belongs to a very different kind of mind – creators and empathizers, pattern recognizers, and meaning makers. These people – artists, inventors, designers, storytellers, caregivers, consolers, big picture thinkers-will now reap society’s rewards and share its greatest joys.”

So begins the book “A Whole New Mind — Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future” by Daniel H. Pink written in 2005. I picked it up from my local library after having it recommended to me by a successful creative business person. Being a creative small business person myself, I was intrigued with the title and the future it promises.

I totally appreciate his advocacy for creatives and really want to believe in his optimism, but the reality of the past 5 years has contributed to my skepticism. It is worth a read, is inspiring, and organizes some key ideas in a very helpful format, but I am not yet convinced of the paradigm shift he outlines. Maybe 5 more years?

Pink also has a new book out called “Drive” where he looks at what truly motivates us as humans. I look forward to exploring his new thesis.
