60 boxes project

There are 60 Utility Boxes within the Downtown Berkeley Area. All of them are grey. The 60 boxes project will work to transform these boxes into art.

Using the theme “Sustainability” we will create 60 mini-murals on the boxes around town and create a “walking tour” website for the public.

Earth Island Institute has support from the Civic Arts Commission to produce this effort, secure funding, hire artists and begin painting. All images will go the Civic Arts Commission for final approval.

WHAT: Artist and business meet and greet with the 60 boxes project
WHEN: Thursday, April 1st at 6 p.m.
WHERE: Earth Island Institute, at the David Brower Center, 2150 Allston Way, Suite 460 Berkeley, CA 94704

100 words on photography

The 100 words: Photographers Speak series on the NPR blog ‘The Picture Show’ is a quick way to get an interesting dose of images and hear from photographers, in their own words about what they do and why. I especially like the latest post and images by Suzanne Opton.

artist Gabriela Bulisova

if you are anywhere on the east coast, please see these images. they are all the things photographs can be – powerful, relevant, inspiring, engaging.

Here is an excerpt from the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts exhibition:

“… Like so many great documentary photographers of the past, Bulisova is not a dispassionate observer, but rather an active advocate for her subjects, someone who combines a fierce belief in social justice with sensitivity to the formal elements of the photographic image. She is sensitive to her subjects’ despair and suffering and respects their dignity and resilience in the midst of often-unimaginable hardship. She, like so many socially committed photographers before her, believes that an image can reveal the truth and move the public to take action…”

artist David Maisel

“By slightly changing our angle of observation, a copse of seemingly random trees reveals itself as an orchard. This specific angle of observation, then, has an independent validity, revealing an order not of the viewers making. Such a surprise visit of the orchard effect is always pleasurable-filled with the delight of recognition, a sense of community of all explorers who also touch base at this common spot.”

The above quote from the novel ‘Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance‘ (about a photograph, actually) by Richard Powers has a nice resonance to the work currently on display at The Brower Center; The Lake Project. By changing our perspective we can gently surprise ourselves and come to understand (or be reminded) that there is a beauty in learning.
