Conversations on Urban China

A great conversation between Catherine Opie and Doug Aitken moderated by Sylvia Lavin.

wine via image

for all you visual thinkers out there, here is a site that reviews wine with images instead of words. They “… have found that using a single image to convey the impression of a particular wine can be a highly rewarding experience for both the reviewer and the audience.”

Wine is indeed art, so check out the Chateau Petrogasm!

berkeley arts & letters

I have not yet been to a discussion/reading here but it looks like a thoughtful group. I look froward to attending one of these lectures soon.

from their website:

“Berkeley Arts & Letters is a project bringing writers and thinkers together with readers for inspiration, provocation, education, and sharing conversations. Produced by Melissa Mytinger and Praveen Madan, we welcome everyone who’s interested in civil discourse, curiosity…and the pleasure of words.”

2010 01SJ Biennal

The 2010 01SJ Biennal is scheduled for September 16 – 19 2010. Produced by the excellent ZER01 this event looks compelling, forward-thinking, and inspiring – all the things art can be.

Find much more information here including open calls, event history, and art links. Deadlines for contributions are coming up fast, so get to it!

The “Build Your Own World” theme suggests, to me, a positive way to engage with a world and a future that can sometimes feel overwhelming even to this optimistic citizen.

BAM/PFA – artist Mark Hosler

I have been following Negativland for quite a while now and was excited to find this. The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive is yet another great resource both online and right up the street! Click on the following link to see the artist present the work: BAM/PFA – Audio & Videocasts

more – art filling empty spaces

see my post from Dec 20, 2009 here on art filling vacant shops – another NYT article “Art Crops Up in Sarajevo’s Shuttered Shops” (click here) by YASMINE RYAN informs us about empty stores in Sarajevo being used by artists.

I find it and encouraging to see art finding a way of getting itself seen – this in itself is relatively unsurprising. However, what is really interesting is the way art is acting as a type of bandage. Perhaps its relationship with commerce is shifting – evidenced by it being used to fill voids left by economic uncertainty…

SFMOMA anniversary

the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will have free anniversary celebrations January 16 – 18, 2010. They are celebrating 75 years! Click here for more information. One cool exhibition on Saturday and Sunday in the Koret Visitor Education Center will be a projection of any Flickr photos or Twitter tweets that have been tagged with: sfmoma75 – I will definitely tag a few Flickr pics of my own and see if they make it up there.

recommended: Dürer in Boston

if you find yourself on the east coast (as I did over the holidays) I highly recommend making a trip to see the Albrecht Dürer: Virtuoso Printmaker show at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston Massachusetts. It is up till July 3, 2010 and you can also see their Egyptian Secrets of Tomb 10a show which is up until May 16, 2010.
